Pedestrian Safety

Safe Kids' multi-faceted pedestrian safety program involves high-visibility school-based events, data collection documenting risks to pedestrians in areas surrounding schools, school safety committees and community-wide pedestrian safety task forces to improve walking environments. The committee is focused on preventing unintentional pedestrian-related injuries and deaths in children. The committee's educational programs are designed to teach safe behavior to child pedestrians and motorists to create safer, more walkable communities. By teaching children how to safely cross streets, where to cross streets, and the rules of the road, pedestrian injuries and deaths decrease. Policies that increase the number of people walking and bicycling also appear to be an effective method for improving the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists.
